They separated on Halloween of 2011 and filed for divorce close to a year ago, and now Zooey Deschanel and Death Cab for Cutie singer Ben Gibbard have officially ended their marriage. A judge signed their divorce decree on December 12th but news of the finalization of their split didn’t hit the media until yesterday.
Deschanel’s divorce petition, filed December 27, 2011 in Los Angeles County Superior Court, cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. Both parties waived their right to seek spousal support, and their petition contained the following statement regarding separate property:
Unless otherwise provided for in any stipulated agreement between the parties, any and all assets and obligations acquired by a party: prior to the date or marriage, during the marriage as a gift or inheritance, or after the date of separation, shall be confirmed to said party as their sole and separate property assets or obligations.
The petition also revealed that Deschanel was making $95,000 a month on average at the time she filed for divorce, and that she had close to $4 million in assets. Given Deschanel’s assets, a divorce attorney might have expected Gibbard to seek support, but Gibbard likely has substantial assets in his own right.
Deschanel and Gibbard married in 2009 and have no children together.
