'New Girl' Season Finale Recap: Taylor Swift, a Badger, and 'Cotton-Eyed Joe'

(Fox)

In the season finale of New Girl, Cece's wedding causes quite a stir. It's a traditional affair with lots of colors, white horses, and, plenty of plotting, badgers, and tears to give you a headache. In the final episode, we find out why Elaine (Taylor Swift) was at the wedding, what happens between Cece and Shivrang, and whether Nick and Jess will take things to the next level.

Here's what went down:

The overall big news...
Cece and Shivrang didn't get married because she's in love with Schmidt, who, unfortunately , must now choose between Elizabeth and Cece. In even bigger news, Nick and Jess decide to officially become a couple!

Schmidt and Cece make eye contact... Schmidt guesses that means she doesn't want to tie the knot.
When Schmidt barges into the women's dressing room before the wedding, he finds Cece, Jess, and all the bridesmaids getting ready for the big day. Of course there's a very brief moment when Schmidt glances at Cece and somehow interprets her look as a cry for help, as if she's begging him to save her from the grips of marriage. Schmidt reveals to the gang what he saw, but Jess shuts it down: do not talk, look, or have any "eye conversations" with her best friend on her wedding day. She will bust him .

Winston realizes he sucks at pranks... but then agrees to carry one out with Schmidt
Thanks to Schmidt's misinformed hypothesis, he is somehow able to lure Winston (who finally admitted that he blows at pranks) into a scheme. Schmidt begs a very hesitant Winston, telling him this is the last prank he'll ever have to do. "Are we going to sabotage this thing or not?" sly Schmidt poses. Hell, yes. Winston agrees. Game on.

The Prank
The ill-planned prank to stop Cece and Shivrang's nuptials involve releasing a badger, messing with Shivrang's horse, and changing the music to "Cotton-Eyed Joe." When Jess discovers that Nick, Schmidt, and Winston are crafting a scheme, she freaks out, especially at Nick. Later during the ceremony, Jess finds out that Nick and Winston are somewhere crawling around the ducks. So, in a valiant effort to put an end to the nonsense she climbs up into the ducks as well.

Jess and Nick have a heart-to-heart
The two are one step closer to figuring out the meaning of their relationship when they are wedged between the ducks. Nick confesses he's an unhealthy, messed-up person. "So part of you agrees?" Nick asks. Yes, Jess says. For now, that's that.

The Badger crashes the wedding
In the heat of Nick and Jess' very important  coversation, gravity takes its toll. Nick, Jess, and the badger all come tumbling down onto the wedding ceremony like a really bad omen. The crowd gasps. Jess' dad (Rob Reiner) gives a very disappointed "no-no" head shake at Nick before storming out of the room after the badger brushes up against his leg.

Cece and Shivrang call off their wedding, Elaine is Shivrang's REAL love...
So in the moment of chaos, truth is forced to come out. It's Cece and Shivrang's perfect
wedding day, but as close as they were to tying the knot, gut instinct tells them that it's wrong. A very distraught Cece addresses the crowd, "I'm sorry everyone, I can't do this." It's not because of the cheesy white horses, the angry badger, or Cotton-Eyed Joe. It's because she's in love with Schmidt. In a surprising twist, Shivrang reveals he's in love with Elaine. "Oh Shivy, I've loved you since the first grade!" Elaine professes. "And I'm so lonely that I just lie awake at night and write about you in my journal and I paint pictures of you on my easel." The two elope to Vegas, and that's that.

Schmidt and Elizabeth and Cece are now in a love triangle
So now with Cece free, Schmidt is forced to choose who he wants to be with. And, no, Schmidt, you can't make pasta, listen to Coldplay, and sleep on it before you decide. So, Schmidt runs away (typical), forcing us to wait until next season to find out what who he chooses.

Jess and Nick relationship status update is... Official!
Nick decides to drink and wallow in his sorrows, well, just because. But, good sweet Winston talks some sense into Nick. "There are other moves," he proclaims. In the heat of the moment, Nick runs for the door. Outside he finds a teary-eyed Jess who begs him to not let things be over between them. That's not what Nick wants either. So... they kiss. Stay tuned for season three to find out if they live happily ever after...

Post-script...Is the badger still missing?
